Our midwives are available to provide postpartum support and newborn care for up to 6 weeks after your birth. After that, we are still here for you – give our office a call if you need anything!

Postpartum Care Overview

• Home Visit 24-72 hours after your birth to check on mom and baby. At this visit we monitor healing, assist with breastfeeding, weigh the baby, check for jaundice, look for signs of adequate intake and output, and take a complete set of vitals on both mother and child. At this visit we can also complete
• Newborn screenings: During the home visit, we are able to complete the CCHD (Critical Congenital Heart Defect), hearing, and metabolic screenings for your newborn. We take the effort to conduct these screenings in the peace of home while baby is able to held by mother, comforted and breastfed as needed. ‍
• Follow-Up Birth Center Visits at 2 and 6 weeks postpartum, with additional visits scheduled as needed. At 2 weeks we will check on baby's growth, mom's healing, and her overall mental or physical needs. At the final visit we offer a PAP test and do a final check-up. This visit is often emotional and joyful as we recall your child’s miraculous birthday and say our good-byes!‍
• Breastfeeding support tailored to your goals and needs with our lactation consultant. All birth clients receive complimentary prenatal and postpartum lactation appointments, and can book additional as needed.
• On-call support: During this time, our midwives remain available by call and text for when questions arise. ‍

Brookhaven does not require our families to see a pediatrician, as CPM’s are trained and licensed to provide newborn care up to six weeks. We may recommend that a baby be seen if a concern arises. Therefore, we encourage families to interview and hire a pediatrician before the baby is born. We maintain a list of friendly pediatricians and family doctors at the birth center.
